Village Group Meeting – March

Nearly 70 WI members had a very entertaining evening with Jamie Sutherland, a professional comedian from Liverpool. He kept us all laughing all evening with his lively stream of jokes, refreshingly without the need for any bad language. He quickly tuned in to his audience, engaged with the front row by name, and picked out a couple of Whitley members (Sue and Ann) for special attention! The time flew by, and we had very good feedback . After refreshments we were entertained by a small group from Antrobus WI with a rhyme about being a WI member

March Book Club

At our March meeting Susan L led the discussion on The Marlow Murder Club by Richard Thorogood (Writer of ‘Death in Paradise’) Members found it light and entertaining, but without much depth. They gave it an average score of 7 – for further information look on the subgroups page.

March 2023 Main Meeting – A Welsh Evening

Our members were greeted at the door with a warm Welsh welcome from Annette, suitably attired in her Welsh costume and were given A Welsh Quiz to complete during the evening.

Music from Welsh Male Voice Choirs and a Welsh harp set the scene and our members contributed to a beautiful display of daffodils – only just out in our gardens this year.

Our Art group meeting in February had a Welsh theme, and some of their work was also displayed. After our usual business members were told about our planned May outing to Chester by coach, with a 2 hr boat trip on the River Dee with refreshments and a licensed bar available.

Jean W took us on a tour of 20 different areas of Wales, showing us pictures from the more familiar North Wales coast and followed the coast around West and South Wales, before stopping for a ‘City Break’ in Cardiff. We travelled back through mid Wales to the Llangollen area. A trip down memory lane for some, new areas to visit for others.

Joan B gave us some background to the history of Wales – telling us about ‘Llewlyn the Great’, the first true Prince of Wales, and her ‘namesake’ Princess Joan of Wales.

At our refreshment break, members were served with home-made Welsh Cakes and Bara Brith, and also our Birthday Cake, courtesy of Ann O’B

Chris J did a presentation about the symbolism of Welsh Lovespoons – she showed us a traditional one and also a contemporary one that she had made and explained the meaning of them

Our evening was completed by a brief lesson in Welsh, with some useful phrases and some humour as members attempted the pronunciation.

Certainly a very Welsh experience!

February Art Group

12 members of our Art Group met with a theme of ‘Daffodils’ or all things Welsh – an early taste of Spring and also to fit in with the ‘Welsh’ theme at our main March meeting. We had lots of daffodils, a leek, and an amazing Welsh dragon – see the subgroup page for more information and pictures
