Village Group Meeting – March

Nearly 70 WI members had a very entertaining evening with Jamie Sutherland, a professional comedian from Liverpool. He kept us all laughing all evening with his lively stream of jokes, refreshingly without the need for any bad language. He quickly tuned in to his audience, engaged with the front row by name, and picked out a couple of Whitley members (Sue and Ann) for special attention! The time flew by, and we had very good feedback . After refreshments we were entertained by a small group from Antrobus WI with a rhyme about being a WI member

March 2023 Main Meeting – A Welsh Evening

Our members were greeted at the door with a warm Welsh welcome from Annette, suitably attired in her Welsh costume and were given A Welsh Quiz to complete during the evening. Music from Welsh Male Voice Choirs and a Welsh harp set the scene and our members contributed to a beautiful display of daffodils – only just out in our gardens this year. Our Art group meeting in February had a Welsh theme, and some of their work was also displayed. After our usual business members were told about our planned May outing to Chester by coach, with a 2…

Birthday Afternoon Tea – Feb 16th 2023

Irene Robinson cut the cake, in recognition of the fact she has been a member of Whitley WI for over 70 years. We did have a short game of bingo towards the end of the afternoon but mostly just enjoyed the tea and the company –…

Our President Melanie welcomed 35 members and 3 visitors. Our speaker was Karen from the local Pets Pantry. We voted on the WI resolutions. Members were then informed of upcoming events, including a Birthday afternoon tea party, a May day outing, a holiday to Bletchley Park and Cambridge, an evening with comedian Jamie Sutherland, a couple of events learning new crafts and the group Spring lunch. The…

Baking Beauties – Jan 2023 – A Family Recipe

This month the topic was a family recipe. Nine members met to offer their recipe, some to honour a family member, others searched very old cook books for inspiration. This resulted in a variety of bakes including a luncheon cake dating back to 1899, egg custard, tea breads, apple cake, walnut bars, Anzec biscuits, meringues and sticky chocolate cake. We are keen to enter for the Cheshire show this year so we had some discussion about gingerbread as this is one of the classes. Jontyn spoke about the original gingerbread of Ormskirk which dated back to the 1800’s which was…
